Moose Safari in Vesterålen with a local guide

We offer guided moose safaris all year long in the stunning landscapes of Vesterålen. The moose – the largest and heaviest species in the deer family – is an unforgettable animal to encounter. Each season offers a different experience, and here’s what you can expect:

Autumn – Rut Season

Autumn is the rutting season, when bull moose show off their massive antlers in landscapes painted with autumn colors. If we’re lucky, we might witness bulls fighting or chasing cows.

Most tours take place early in the morning or in the evening, depending on daylight conditions – which change quickly the further into the season we go.

Please note: Moose hunting season begins on September 25th. We still run our tours, but we try to avoid hunting zones. Occasionally, you might see hunting activity from a safe distance.

And don’t worry about a little rain – the moose certainly don’t mind!

Winter – Moose in a Snowy Wonderland

During winter, we offer tours both in daylight and under the Northern Lights. Moose blend beautifully into the snowy Arctic landscape, and in early winter, bulls may still have their antlers.

This is a fantastic time to combine moose safari with a Northern Lights chase. Your guide is equipped to film you and the moose under the aurora, and you’ll receive the footage after the tour.

Winter also offers the best daytime conditions for spotting moose – it's a truly magical experience.

Spring – Movement and Migration

Spring brings life back to the north. Moose begin moving from their winter grounds to summer pastures, and birdlife returns to the region. At this time, it's not uncommon to see moose swimming or wandering through unusual areas.

Like in autumn, tour start times vary with the changing light. From May, the Midnight Sun arrives, and we recommend evening, night, or early morning tours.

Summer – Calves and Midnight Sun

June and early July are calving season, and spotting young moose is the highlight of the summer. Bulls start regrowing their antlers, and by late summer they look magnificent.

Thanks to the Midnight Sun, we offer tours around the clock – though nighttime offers the best chance of close-up encounters.

Why Choose Us?

At Vesterålen Tours, we spend countless hours tracking moose year-round. We know many of them individually and can read their behavior and body language – giving you the best possible chance for a meaningful wildlife experience. The guide will also take pictures and send you after the tour.

And remember: Don't care about the weather forecast to much – the moose don’t care about the weather!
